First time at the rugby? Here’s our bluffers guide for the essential info you can use to impress your friends, colleagues or clients…
Newcastle were established 1877 as the Gosforth Football Club. Around 1882, the club merged with the Northumberland Football Club and briefly assumed their name until 1887. In 1990, the name was changed to Newcastle Gosforth and the club began to play at the Kingston Park stadium. The club became Newcastle Rugby Club before adopting its current name.
The Falcons won the English Premiership in 1997-98 with a young Jonny Wilkinson but have since spent two seasons in the RFU Championship, winning promotion back to the top flight in the 2012/13 and 2019/20 seasons.
The most celebrated would surely be England World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson who joined Newcastle Falcons in 1997 straight from school, leaving for Toulon in 2009. He got to play with rugby union and league star Inga Tuigamala who joined from Wigan rugby league in 1996, All Black prop Carl Hayman and Australia fullback Matt Burke.
The current team have one of Wilkinson’s former Falcons teammates in England international Toby Flood who brings composure to the backline. Also look out for the experienced pair of Michael Young at scrum half and giant prop Logovi’i Mulipola while they are led by England back rower Mark Wilson who’s back from a year on loan at Sale Sharks.
Harlequins have the better of fixtures between the two clubs, winning 25 encounters to Newcastle’s 19. Unusually for rugby where they’re not a common outcome, this fixture has thrown up 3 draws!
The 2020/21 fixture between these two teams at The Twickenham Stoop is currently scheduled to take place on Saturday 12th June.
